In March 2019, SASH was one of hundreds of homeless charities to request funding in our spring grant programme. The Trustees whittled down the list to 16 incredible projects. Take a look at our article below to find out how your donations have changed lives for young people in York.
SASH supports 16-25 year olds in North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire to break the cycle of homelessness. It is vital to reach out to young people before they become entrenched in the homeless lifestyle. SASH’s project, Nightstop, received £1,000 in the spring grant programme. Nightstop provides service users with up to 14 nights of emergency accommodation.
They currently have around 80 volunteer hosts across Yorkshire who provide a spare room, support and care for SASH’s clients. All hosts are fully trained and supported by the SASH team while the charity is busy at work finding a more permanent solution for the young person. Hosts are ordinary people with a spare room that want to make a difference.
While Nightstop supports young people for up to two weeks, Supported Lodgings can house a young person for up to two years. During this time, they enjoy a range of activities and skills courses, like a six week cookery workshop, to build confidence, motivation, employability and a pathway to independence.
If you have a spare room and want to make a difference, SASH are always searching for more volunteer hosts. Read Denise and Brian’s story to see if becoming a host is right for you. Click here for more.

Deborah Rack, Trust Fundraiser for SASH said: “It is wonderful to have this support from the Fine & Country Foundation for our emergency Nightstop service. Last year we arranged over 1,100 nights of safe accommodation for young people who had nowhere to go at a time of crisis. It costs over £290 a day to run our emergency referral line and donations such as these are hugely important to us.
“SASH is very grateful to the Fine and Country Foundation for believing in our work, and providing support for young people facing homelessness.”
